The Last Supper painting is considered to be a masterpiece because it shows the emotions that are being evoked such as anger and sadness. According the event in the bible of the Last Supper, that’s when Jesus told his disciples that he was going to be crucified. The emotions that are being evoked in the viewer, was how the apostles were astonished after he told them what was going to happen to him. The emotions that are being evoked are “anxious or unknown feeling because a lot of the people have this expression when they are kind of shocked and like a worry, kind like a surprise because there is a lot of people just wondering what’s going to happen” (Carney). The Last Supper painting was chosen to be a decoration of a room used for communal meals because of the communion theme of sacrifice. After Jesus says to the disciple that one of you will betray me, each of them reacts according to his own personality. “Christ is very serene so it gives us this feelings of peace and serenity and his disciples look like they are bickering or arguing or kind looking in a disbelieve at him or in his direction so it is also a feeling of confusion of chaos” (Lindsay). The painting shows them arguing, others are yelling and the rest looks mad.
In conclusion, the Last Supper painting is a masterpiece because it is the work of a genius whose work was restored and valued for centuries; it uses the language of the day through the dress and common religion, and it moves the viewer to feel emotions such as anger and sadness. It's the work of genius because people wanted to restore it due to its high qualities and its value. It would have been pointless to restore a painting as the Last Supper and waste a lot of money if this painting didn't have any meaning behind it. The painting shows the current style of the day because it shows the clothes they wore during that time and the portrayal of Jesus. We see how da Vinci portrays Jesus as a white person, but that’s not how he looks based on his geographic location. He painted Jesus as a white person so he would look far different from the African people since slavery was happening during the time of period. Finally, the emotions that are being evoked are anger and sadness. We see how the disciples are yelling and others are astonished after hearing what Jesus has told them.
